JURISDICTION for India: Residents of IA, IL, IN,, MI, MN, MO, ND, SD, and WI are processed in Chicago.


VALIDITY for India: Visas are normally valid for 1 year (Business) or 6 months (Tourist) and are Multiple Entry. You may request 5 or 10 year Business visas but they are issued at the Consulate's discretion.

Visas for India

Step 1: Have a Valid Passport

You must have a passport with at least 6 months of validity remaining and blank visa pages available for the visa stamp. If you need to obtain a United States Passport, renew a US Passport or add pages, we can help you with that - see "Get a US Passport" above. Step 2: Complete India Application Online

You must make the Indian application online. Fill in all fields and once completed, print the document, and sign and date it in blue ink. Once you have made the online application, it must be submitted within 6 months or it becomes invalid. If you were born in India, please call us for additional information before making application. Step 3: Assemble Documents

We will take your documents to the Consulate of India and once the visa has been issued, pick it up and ship it to you.

There may be occasions when the Consulate will want to see additional documentation; AVS will contact you as soon as we are notified of any problems. We cannot always predict what additional items the Consulate may need to see.

In addition to your completed application, you must provide the following:

For All Applicants

+ Valid Passport - Passport must be signed. See Step 1.

+ 2 Passport-type Photos - 2 inches x 2 inches, color photos on a white background; colored or dark backgrounds not accepted. India does not allow glasses to be worn in photos for visas

+ Proof of Residence - copy of State issued Driver's License or State ID. For minors without photo ID, include a copy of the parent's ID.

+ Copy of Birth Certificate - clear photocopy of original Birth Certificate issued by the state or county. This must state the name of the Father and Mother. See Important Notes below for more info.

 

For tourism

For business
+ Travel itinerary is NOT REQUIRED but we suggest you send one 

 

+ Original business letter on company letterhead signed by Senior Management (other than the applicant) stating the following:

 

  • name and address of contact in India
  • length and purpose of visit
  • statement of financial responsibility
  • mention of round trip tickets
  • Letter must be addressed to "Consul General of Chicago"

+ Invitation from the company to be visited in India
A good-quality fax is acceptable. This must state the nature of the visit, confirm the places and dates in the business letter (see above) and be signed.

For non-US Passports

+ Copy (front & back) of Alien Registration Card ("Green Card"), or copy of other US visa

+ Additional information sheet - all Non-US Passports must fill this out


Note: Foreign Passport often take longer to process (4 to 5 days in some cases) than US Passports. Call us for Consulate fees for non-US Passports.

Pakistani and Bangladeshi citizens or those born in Pakistan or Bangladesh will need to make a personal appearance at the Indian Consulate to obtain a visa.

Regarding the Birth Certificate requirement: Only the long-form of a birth certificate which lists both parents' names is acceptable by the Indian Consulate. US citizens born overseas must provide the long-form issued by the military, US authority (if the birth was later registered in the US) or foreign government. All foreign birth certificate must be translated into English and notarized.

Step 4: Place order & send documents

Once you have completed the application, gathered all the necessary documents and review any Important Notes you are ready to place you order with American Visa Service.

We suggest you ship documents by UPS Next Day Air as all other options generally arrive after 9:30 a.m. AVS is not responsible for deliveries to our office. American Visa Service, Inc. is not responsible for passports lost, delayed or damaged by any government office, Consulate or delivery service.
