Why must my passport be valid for at least 6 months prior to foreign travel?
There is always the possibility that you could become ill while abroad and have to stay beyond your planned return date. If your passport were to expire while traveling, this could create problems for the Immigration Authorities in another country. It is also important to note that this requirement is often enforced by airlines, or at the border as you enter, which is why AVS always recommends you keep your passport current. If you have 5 months and 3 weeks validity remaining and a strict Airline Agent will not let you board the plane or an Immigration Agent denies you entry upon arrival, it creates more wasted time and money than just renewing your passport about a year before it expires.
